The interceptor is the ultimate defensive ship, although it can be used in close ranged assaults. It has no shields, no missiles and no ripcord ability but its high maneuverability, strong hull and powerful miniguns more than make up for it. It has a low top speed and relies on its booster heavily - an int with no fuel is very little threat.
Since ints have no ripcord ability the commander must build outposts or techbases at the edges of their territory to give his pilots somewhere to launch from. As such, the interceptor is strongly associated with "constructor pushes": where the team escorts an outpost constructor into an enemy sector, defends it while it builds, then uses it as a launch platform to camp the enemy base before launching the more vulnerable bomber or troop transport.
Ints were developed to stay near stations with their inherently large scan ranges, and so the engineers never thought to equip ints with a decent scanning suite of their own. As such int pilots rely on their teammates to supply info when in enemy sectors - many an int has been podded by a lower quality pilot simply because they couldn't find them to fight back.

Mk II - Interceptor
Requires an Expansion Complex to research. Available as long as Exp stays alive.
- Hitpoints increased to 700
- Max speed increased to 80
- Fuel increased to 15
Mk III - Heavy interceptor
Requires Interceptor and advanced exp to research. Available as long as exp stays alive.
- Hitpoints increased to 750
- Max speed increased to 90
- Scan increased to 500
- Fuel increased to 16
- +1 weapon slot (minigun or EMP cannon)
Exceptions
Bios
- Can mount heavy cloak.
Belters
- Can mount dis or gatt in any and all weapon slots.
- Heavy int can mount nan on its first weapon slot.
- Can mount dumbfire missiles.
- Once researched, can continue to use interceptors after exp dies.
GigaCorp
- Once heavy ints are researched luxury interceptors become available for $500 each.
- Can ripcord (20 sec)
- Has better scanrange (600 m)
- Has 33% less fuel
- Has lead indicator
