- Abbreviation: sy
The Shipyard is required for any and all capital class ships. Shipyards are not commonly seen as many commanders view them as bit of a "money sink". This is the only technology path that it's not uncommon to see turned off in the game settings by the Controller, especially in small games (in which it can be quite overpowered).
A Supremacy, Expansion, or Tactical must be built before the option to build a Shipyard becomes available. The one exception is the Iron Coalition, which can build a Shipyard from the start of the game. However, building a tech base first will pre-research the Light ship class for the Coalition.
At the time of writing[1] the community core has the shipyard techtree as a linear progression of ship classes. Each class level unlocks new capships and better equipment, and must be researched before the next level can be unlocked. All equipment researched in the shipyard are capital ship upgrades, such as large shields and heavy countermeasures. Advanced equipment also requires the Drydock upgrade, which upgrades the station itself, and becomes available with Medium class. The Shipyard has one Global Attribute (GA) that can be researched: Ship speed.
