Revision as of 02:55, 20 December 2022
In Allegiance the statlines for all the different ships, stations, factions etc. are kept in a small database file called the Core file, which uses the .igc file extension. By using a program called ICE, developers can tweak the various attributes to improve or change game balance. As there is more than one developer, each with their own idea of what is "balanced" and "fun", several different cores have evolved over time.
Example Think of it like this. You are playing a FPS set in World War II and you run out of ammo for your M1 Garand rifle. It takes you 3 seconds to reload. Now you jump into another WWII game and everything is exactly the same... except the developer of this one has decided the M1 Garand was a bit overpowered and so increased its reload time to 3.5 seconds. Same game, tiny difference.
Now multiply that tiny difference by a thousand. Technically you've still got two versions of the exact same game, but all the differences have added up to make it a completely different gaming experience. In Allegiance, these tiny differences have been adding up for ten years, with many different developers getting in on the act.
History of cores
The flowchart below indicates which core is (or was originally) based upon which.
Note Inactive means the original developer has indicated they do not desire to continue updating it. Developer MIA indicates the original developer stopped playing Allegiance.
On AU indicates the core is either still on Automatic Update, or is part of the default install package. Either way, those are the ones most players can play.
