FAZ Beta is the next version of Allegiance currently under work by the development team. They strive to fix bugs and add features that players want, and in some cases, have wanted since Allegiance was first released.

The Development team is headed by the Development Zone Leader.

When the public testing is begun it is important that you partake because it affects you in a few ways:
* Firstly, and most importantly, it is used to check that the new release is compatible with players computers. If there is an undetected bug that only affects you and you don't join in to test it, then the bug won't get fixed. When the release goes Gold you'll be stuck with it!
* Secondly you will find that on testing nights there will be no one to play with on the main server, as most players will be on seperate beta server.
* Thirdly, if you log on to the beta server not only will you be helping the development team stress test the engine, you'll get to play with all the new features months in advance!

Why is it called FAZ Beta?

When Microsoft originally released the game there were two Zones players could play on, the Free Zone and the Allegiance Zone. FAZ stands for Free Allegiance Zone and represents the community driven evolution of Allegiance since MS dropped the game.

A major part of the Beta process is public "stress testing" of the new client in order to detect any bugs that were unforeseen and don't happen on the developers' computers. They are also used to provide community feedback on code changes that may affect game balance.

<font color="red">If you don't test the new client on your machine before it goes 'live' and then discover that the new version doesn't work for you ... sucks to be you. So make sure you do test it!</font>

Besides, you get to try out all the new toys months before they're released!

FAZ Beta test games are held every Wednesday on a seperate server lobby to normal Allegiance games. To play them you need to make sure you have the latest Beta client from the Beta Development forum and then either log in to ASGS after toggling the 'Beta' option, or use the new .exe file to log in - it depends on how much security the dev team is running with.

Furthurmore, many new players suggestions are nearly impossible to implement as they would require a completely different physics engine than what the game uses ("Tractor beams", for example). Such ideas tend to get ignored.

Beta builds are run on a special development lobby to weed out bugs. Towards the end of each development cycle public beta games are held weekly to stress test the new releases and find the final bugs.

How does FAZ Beta affect me?

When the public testing is begun it is important that you partake because it affects you in a few ways:

 • Firstly, and most importantly, it is used to check that the new release is compatible with players computers. If there is an undetected bug that only affects you and you don't join in to test it, then the bug won't get fixed. When the release goes Gold you'll be stuck with it!
 • Secondly you will find that on testing nights there will be no one to play with on the main server, as most players will be on seperate beta server.
 • Thirdly, if you log on to the beta server not only will you be helping the development team stress test the engine, you'll get to play with all the new features months in advance!

When does Beta testing go public?

When the Beta build is ready for public testing the Development Zone Leader will make an announcement on the FAO's homepage and/or broadcast a message to people logging in using ASGS.

How do I join?

FAZ Beta test games are held every Wednesday on a seperate server lobby to normal Allegiance games. To play them you need to make sure you have the latest Beta client from the Beta Development forum and then either log in to ASGS after toggling the 'Beta' option, or use the new .exe file to log in - it depends on how much security the dev team is running with.

I want [insert crazy idea]

So do we all! But don't get too excited. The dev team has a whole list of Bugs/features that players have discovered/invented, and it's been slowly growing for the past seven years. Furthurmore, many new players suggestions are nearly impossible to implement as they would require a completely different physics engine than what the game uses ("Tractor beams", for example). Such ideas tend to get ignored.

If you have a serious suggestion post it up in the Development forum and, if it's a good idea, it'll be stuck on the 'To-Do' list.

What is being worked on currently?

The fifth release, R5, is still in closed beta. Most of the development team's goals have been to do with upgrading the graphics, but there will be numerous other features added too. See the changelog for furhur details.
