The do's and don'ts of survival in our community

Our community is comprised of a wide spectrum of individuals, from young teenagers to players in their 50's. You will find us a mature community compared to other gaming communities - the average player age is 27! We work hard to keep the peace here, but just like the real world we have good and bad. You will find out very fast who is who. Take everything here with a grain of salt and stay cool. One of the best posts ever made in our community was by Pook, our retired Admin.

Pook's Rules of Conduct for Dummies

Act like an adult

Even if you aren't one. This is a mature community based around a game. G-A-M-E - it's not a lifestyle, it's not your fan club, it's not your escape from reality where you're the playground bully. Being good at a video game doesn't mean anything except that you have too much time on your hands and can't find a productive way to spend it.

Be Civil

Everyone wants to play, nobody wants to be hassled. When in doubt, see the rule above.

Everyone gets to play

You don't get to decide who gets to play and who doesn't. I don't care if they have a !@#$&% (-3) tag, let them play... so long as they follow the rules.

Don't be stupid

When you're doing something you know you shouldn't do, you're being stupid. I don't care if you're trying to make a point, push a political agenda, or just like annoying other people. Don't do that. When in doubt, see the above rules.

— Quoted from Pook

There you have it. If you follow these four simple rules you won't violate the official RoC and everyone will be happy. If you don't follow these simple rules, then you don't get to play.

Some important items to remember

Our job in this course is to get you going on the right foot in-game so you don't look like an idiot or earn a bad reputation right away (btw it takes years to shake a bad rep!).

  • Do NOT spam the channels with useless voice chats,
    • Not in the lobby nor in-game. It is both annoying and a bootable offense.
    • Doing so in-game can cause you to miss important tactical info because the chat lines are just flying past.

  • The main game is not the same as newbie servers
    • The fun high-money and all-tech games on the newbie server really don't exist on the vet server.
    • The Vet server is where some really SERIOUS players are located.

  • Don't ask for "better tech"
    • Either you suck with the tech that the team has,
    • or you are flying a basic ship instead of an advanced one,
    • or the team is getting its ass kicked and your commander can't afford better tech.

  • READ! And keep rereading! Do ask questions. Get Mumble and login!

  • While a member of the course, your actions reflect on all other members,
    • Not just other rookies but your instructors too.
    • Please act accordingly.

  • Don't brag about how great you are.
    • A large number of players here have been playing this game for over 8 years.
    • Your couple of weeks of experience does not qualify you as an expert.
    • Don't make stupid and outrageous claims. Your reputation you earn early on will stick with you for a long time.

  • Don't insult other players, even if the veterans are.
    • Some of us have been playing together for years. We have close friendships. What I say in-game to a friend would really upset a stranger.
    • Yes, there is trash talk. But it is usually between friends or people who respect each others skills. Don't get drawn into it.

  • Don't make a bad name for yourself.
    • We could tell you the names of dozens of players who have driven themselves out of Allegiance by their actions and remarks. Don't be one of them.
    • Don't try to draw attention to yourself in the lobby. People do pay attention to your actions.
    • You would be surprised on the number of people who are not admitted to squads because of how immature they act in-game or on the forums.

  • Take a grain of salt, and hang on to the shaker.
    • We have DRAMA here. We have really nice people and some not so nice people. With time you will learn who is who.

  • Take your first boot and learn from it.
    • In general, your first boot is usually valid. It happens to every player sooner or later.
    • Just might be the wrong action you took on a commander's bad day.

  • DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING PERSONAL IN-GAME!

Do all this and you will survive.

Finally, the Common mistakes article has a great list of things to avoid doing. Some of it might not make sense yet, but please do read it!
