A mercenary is a term, not commonly used, to refer to a player who has graduated from @Cadet or otherwise proved his skills in-game but is not in a squadron. New players lacking the skill or respect to join a squad are not considered mercenaries.
Mercenaries can be either players that chosen not to join any squad for various personal reasons, players who have quit their last squad and looking for a new home or players whose old squad dissolved on them.
