Joining a Game
1st log on through ASGS (CSS).
2nd click "Free Games". At this point game updates will automatically download and install, and the Message of the Day will scroll past in the background.
3rd click "The button whose description escapes me momentarily". After this you will be placed in the Master Lobby, which is a list of all the games currently running.
4th select the game you want to join and click "Join Game".
Joining a Team
When you join a game you're automatically placed on Not On A Team (NOAT) regardless of whether the game has started. To join a team simply select one from the list on the top left, and press "Join Team" on the top right.
Joining the CORRECT team:
Next to the team name you will see a series of numbers like this "Team 1 (12/100)[131]". What this means is that there are 12 people out of a possible 100 on Team 1. Every player has a rank from 0 to 25 and the [131] is the total rank of all the players on the team.
As a new player you want to join the team with the HIGHER total rank because it is the STRONGER team, and you joining it will make a little bit weaker and make the game a little more balanced. Sometimes, however, you will not be able to join this team because it has more players than the other team. If that happens, it may be a good idea to wait for a more skilled player to join the weaker team first.
What's the delay?
Sometimes the team commander may not accept you onto his team immediately. Accepting players takes a little bit of time, and he may be busy controlling his team. Or he may not want a new player because he feels his team is already too weak. If you're not accepted within a minute type a message in the main chat, something polite like "Hi, can I join blue team, or do you want me to join the yellow team instead?"
If a commander is refusing to accept you on to his team AND not giving a reason why, then make a complaint.
Sometimes there will be lots of people in the lobby, but no game going. There is usually some downtime between games as players want to discuss the previous game, get a snack, change teams, etc. Please be patient! This can sometimes be frustrating for new players, but it's probably just people need to take a short break from the previous game.
