Week Three End
Congratulations you've completed Cadet I! All that's left is the appendix which has the Cadet II signup, some useful links, and the feedback section.
This week we covered:
- How to defend against enemy bomb runs.
- How to support friendly bomb runs.
- The basics of figs and ints and the various weapons.
- Why probing is important throughout the game.
- How to deprobe.
With all the knowledge you've gained you should be able to join a team and be immediately useful, whether it be scouting the enemy sectors, defending miners/cons or escorting bomb runs. Yes, these are all support roles and not very "glorious" but they are essential. More importantly you are still a very new player and you can't expect to take point and be the hero quite yet. Continue to play and continue to observe the good players - and don't forget to sign up for Cadet II!
Review questions
Can you believe it, we're still not finished with that same screenshot! You really can get a lot of information from a single screenshot, can't you? Examine it again (direct link here) and then attempt to answer the questions below. The answers are in white text - simply highlight the text to view them.
Enemy fighter
1. Consider Idanmel@RT and the members of blue team chasing him. What faction is Idanmel? What do you know about that faction? Dreg - the fastest faction.
2. How fast is he going? How far ahead is he from Mannaroth? Idan is going 190 mps and has about a 1k lead over Mannaroth, the closest blue pilot.
3. Does he have his shields mounted? No.
4. Does yellow team have a teleporter? No.
5. So what do you think Idanmel is trying to do? He is boosting away from the blue pilots. If he had a ripcord he would use it to escape, but since he doesn't he is lowering his shields (and missiles too probably) to try and lose eye. Once he has a decent lead he will stop boosting and then head in a new direction.
6. Do you think he will succeed? Probably. He is Dreg, the fastest faction and he already has a 1k lead. As long as he doesn't run out of fuel long before his pursuers he should be able to maintain that lead. The scout may be able to catch him though, as it has a good scan range and a higher cruising speed.
7. So why are 5 members of blue team trying to catch up with a dreg adv fig? Because they're idiots. Idiots that chase the closest enemy instead of doing something useful (such as reloading, checking the minimap, reading the chat, and taking screenshots of idiots).
End game
8. Consider the chat at the top of the screen. What are IB and the comm saying? IB is setting up a decoy in the Oblivion sector. The comm is asking the team to get back to base and purchase bombers.
9. Consider the techpaths that blue team have pursued. What end-game tech can you surmise they've gotten? They have adv sup and upgraded their garrison - evidenced by their adv fighters and adv scouts. If you know the tech tree you know that with these two tech stations they unlock teleport probes. The two scouts in L'Sau that we see on the minimap probably have TP ready to go and are just waiting for a distraction from IB.
10. So what should you do to help the team win? Do what the comm says, of course! Get back to base and purchase a bbr. Ask the team whether you need to load SRM or XRM missiles, then sit in base and wait for the go signal. Do not waste time chasing individual enemy fighters across half a sector!
