This article explains why a Base Turret feature is unlikely to ever be coded into Allegiance.

Hey, I have a great idea! Bases should have turrets built in to defend themselves!

  1. Modern military bases have their own defenses... its reasonable to see why these bases would as well.
  2. Not all bases need it, maybe just the bigger ones.
  3. You could make it so the turrets could be killed (so they aren't too godly).
  4. It would be awesome!

At first, the idea seems reasonable enough. However, there are several problems that will keep this idea from ever becoming reality.

  1. Balance of the game:
    • Missiles shot by bombers could be shot down forever, effectively making bases invulnerable against missiles.
    • It would be nigh impossible for an htt to capture a base.
    • Defending miners becomes painfully easy when they are near the base.
    • Camping a base becomes difficult, if not impossible (some might argue that this is a good thing).
  2. Difficult to implement:
    • Allegiance's code doesn't currently support base turrets. Only ships can have them and the two are not related at all. The time to implement these turrets is not reasonable for our 100% volunteer dev team.
    • Base models don't have the necessary parts to support turrets. All base models would need to be remade in order to support these turrets.
  3. Unsporting:
    • Base turrets don't exactly follow the teamwork based gameplay that Allegiance is based on. Base turrets would allow players to camp in base for the entire game and just rack up kills.
