You can either defend a station, a friendly drone, or a friendly player.

Stations

Stations need to be defended when the enemy launch a major attack. As soon as your team spots a major attack the location on the minimap will start flashing very brightly (see "The Map" section). You need to get to whichever area is about to be attacked and launch in a fighter or an interceptor (see "Ships" section).

Then, and this is the important part, stay with your teammates. If you rush the enemy by yourself you will be picked off by their escort ships. Do your best to kill as many enemy as you can - start with the smallest enemy ships and work your way up.

When you're killed, do your best to respawn as quickly as possible and get back to the defence (see "Eject pods and respawning" section).

Friendly drones

Drones are AI-controlled ships that your Commander purchases and orders around. The most common types of drones are constructors ("con" for short) and miners and it is very important to keep both alive. Miners fly to helium asteroids, take about a minute to extract it, and then redock at base to convert the helium into credits. If all your miners die then your team will be poor, and not able to afford new ships, stations, nor technology. Cons fly deep into unclaimed space to build a new station on asteroids. Constructors can only be used once each, and always start their journey at your home base. They can be attacked at any stage of their journey and losing one is not just a loss of money, but of the time taken to prepare and send a new one.

The best way for you to defend a drone is to escort in a scout with a repair system mounted. The repair system is called the Nanite Repair System Gun ("nan" for short) and the scout is almost the only ship that can use it (certain factions have unique abilities that allow them to put nans on different ships). To use your nan, simply mount it in your weapon slot and fire it at what you want to repair. As long as you hit, their hull will be repaired (shields cannot be repaired, but do recharge).

To get a nan, simply go to the ship load-out screen while you're in base. Select the scout, then right-click on a cargo slot and choose "ER Nanite". To swap between your normal gun and the nan in your cargo press Ctrl-1 (by default).

Since you have no gun while your nan is in use, you could try carrying some proximity mines to drop behind your ship. You put them in cargo the same way, and use them press 0 or d (by default).

Friendly ships

Although you can repair any friendly player, most of them will be flying ships too small and too fast for you to keep up with and repair. However when your team makes a major attack on an enemy station you need to defend the main ship. In this case, it is important to get as many friendly players repairing the main ship as possible, so the enemy cannot damage it faster than it is repaired.

You should get a nanite repair system ("nan" for short) and escort the main ship during its attack. See "Friendly drones" above for what a nan is and how to use it.

The main ship will be either a bomber ("bbr" for short), heavy troop transport ("htt" for short), or even a capital ship ("cap" for short) which can be over ten times larger than your scout!
