I currently think about buying an a VW E-UP. Because of the low mass and extremly well designed power train this is an excellent car for its purpose (driving to work and back). It is among the most efficient cars when fuel powered which means high ranges if electric.
There is a special leasing offer for Daimler Smart EV which includes 5 days/year rent-free Van or Limo. If VW does the same and my gf allows me spending so much I will invest once the E-Up is public available.
I have a johnson photo in my profile since 2010.

Presumably designed in Yorkshire.

I really liked the part about the explosive malfunctions of the batteries...

Oh, my phone is ringi-BOOOOOOOM!!!!

Well... yeah. A modern laptop battery already has about the same amount of energy as a hand grenade. Usually you can't release it very quickly, of course but shorting a fully charged one is a bad idea™. Now increase the energy density by a factor of ten.

*MrChaos thinks*

A hand grenade

*happy sigh*
*goes a-goggling*

edit1:
Lithium battery

Energy density
Specific Energy
Power to weight
kilowatt hr

edit2:
Energy in TNT
4.184 megajoules per kg

laptop battery
rated at 11.1V 4.4amp hr or 49w hr ( watt = j/s)

49 j/s * hr * 3600 s /hr * megaj/1000000 j = .1746 megajoules

hand grenade
150 grams of TNT... no good source just lots of everyone knows this is correct but ok
.6276 megajoules

so not really, if you buy the numbers, but surprising close at least to me

To put it into perspective:

Gasoline is 46.4 megajoules per kg
1 gallon of gas weighs about 3 kg

139.2 megajoules for a gallon of gas
meaning gasoline stores 800 times more energy by mass then a laptop battery

All a thought exercise tbs and getting the energy out of the battery all at once is not realistic

I know :iluv:

Still dangerous enough if you short it. It will get pretty damn hot for one, and if it ruptures... well, lithium can be nasty stuff.
