I've started converting most of the bmp.mdl files (files larger than 15? kb) to text-based-bmp.mdl files (png).
I ran into problems and out of time. For some reason Allegiance didn't like some of these converted images and these files were part of the GUI.
What to do:
Make a list of all GUI files
Make a list of unused GUI files
Goal:
Reduce installer size
Remove unused content from installer
Converted artwork:

Converting artwork to PNG

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.
DevFTP is no more, but I still have original artwork CDs.

I still have my pngs, want them?
I have them as 32bit 24bit colour with 8bit alpha (all set to fully opaque), and as 32bit with 32bit colour.
I seem to have folders which contain only the .png versions of files which are found in the allegiance art directory, and also .pngs of all the source artwork.
I sourced original SW core and GT art, veggie had lost original TF art. The GT source actually turned out to be different to what we use today.

I was going to complain that PNG weapon effects have horrible tearing issues, but then I tested the normal ones and noticed the same problem. Man, the things you get used to when you aren't looking for them.

k, I only did read this topic title, flew over like DATA from StarTreck, and now...
Why do you choose PNG instead of similar ASSEMBLER alike behaviour; I mean, why not use the fastest instead of interpretation needed graphic format? It is comparable to compiled to things like PHP, you know. Good luck, one of my remaining Eurocents.
/edit
I would like to add teh following:
Do use a Format of Graphic which is not going to evolve that a lot in Future, its documenation comes near to extinction, I wanted to say, use a ready-made non-a.lpha nor b.eta thing'y...
