16th Granite, 568, Early Spring

It took a couple of weeks but we've finally carved out a fine entrance-hallway and a place for a reasonable food stockpile. Up next is the dormitory (and later barracks). I'm going to have to get the Death to make us some beds out of the few logs we have. If we need to I can send him down to the bottom of the cliff and chop a few trees down and maybe gather some plants . . . in fact, the sooner the better, probably, since all I've scouted so far are few Hoary Marmots down there. Also a good oportunity to make some nice winter clothing!

We lucked out! The snow has melted, the river brook has thawed, the halls are widening. Bowelchambers is off to a good start. I've got the "miners" down in the layer of rock at the bottom of the cliff digging paths for future farm plots. Turkey said his mother was a mechanic and he picked pu a few things, so he's going to make us some levers and floodgates for an irrigation system. The stairwell going to the farm plots is about 13 layers deep (or so), but I don't really think we had much choice in the matter, and it goes all the way up to the top through the dining hall, some food stockpiles, and the food preparation area to the cliff where Slagpile's walled off a nice pasture for the few animals we've got. The hen's been laying eggs, too, which should give us some nice variety.

I never thought I'd say this, but it's starting to look like we won't starve to death. We shouldn't get too excited, though. I've spotted a Giant Eagle soaring high in the skies just waiting to swoop down and pierce our livestock. I don't want to think about what would happen if we went without meat.

24th Malachite, 568, Mid-Summer

Farm plots are just about muddied and up and suddenly eight new dwarves have showed up in the east. I don't know if they're lost or if they some how knew we were here. Are those foul creatures spying on us? Who does that damned eagle work for? At any rate, new blood is always good, and I won't reject an Axedwarf any day! I'm going to get every one into some basic military training for at least a few months out of the year, just in case. If you can strike rock, you can strike goblin, my mother always said. The Axedwarf doesn't know any other useful skills and he said he's worked well with criminals before, so I've given him an office etc and started calling him a "Sheriff."

17th Timber, 568, Late Autumn

A dwarven caravan from Vabok Kebon got in from the south. Apparently we're the only people who don't know where this fort is located. Of course, we got lost, maybe they did too. Razor sharp rocks everywhere, and it started snowing again a couple of months ago. Plus, more migrants came and THEY brought two children! I ought to lock up their parents, I mean the least they could do is let me put them to work. All they do is sit around playing with the dead things laying in the hallways, and they always end up in our food.

Soon they'll be asking me for $#@!ing daycare.

1st Granite, 569, Early Spring

Well it looks like we survived our first winter, and it was almost too easy. For a while there we were practically snowed in but we had no reason to go outside -- too damn cold! I put some of the fresh blood to work mining, picked up a couple of pickaxes from the caravan, along with an assload of food and booze. I don't really care what happens to us as long as we're fat by the end of it. There's still workshops everywhere in the halls, but that should be remedied pretty quickly.

One of the new guys, calls himself a Miller, went crazy and kicked Slagpile out of the craftsdwarf shop in the name of some kind of $#@!ing invention. Didn't even tell me he needed anything, just picked up some hematite (Iron) and made a goddamn bracelet out of it. He calls it Rithlutalath, "Waxbolted." On the plus side, apparently he's got a knack for working with stones now, about as good as some of the legendary stoneworkers back in the mountainhomes.

We ran into a couple of layers of obsidian so I figured why not make some nice bedrooms in it. Should be nice change from the orgy everyone was having sleeping together. Plus the craftdwarf is making obsidian swords! I just got mine last week, oh the way it shines! Some goblin thieves have showed up trying to snatch something, although I have no clue what. Makes me think someone is waiting in ambush for an opportunity.
