I have tried to make some custom textures for the planets but i cant get them to work. Nothing over 256x256 works. Also the file size is different: nebplntxxbmp.mdl size for 256x256 = 131192 bytes and any other 256x256 mdl is 131188 bytes.

Yes I tried 512 and 1024. Also in both Faz and beta. I only tried the training mission which uses nebplnt29bmp.mdl . I also tried renaming one of the working 512x512 from the artwork folder and that failed too.

You can't rename an mdl. The filename is stored within the actual mdl itself; if that stored filename and the actual filename don't match, crash.

I think he is saying he took one of the 512x512 textures (Pheonix, GT, etc) and copy/pasted it w/ the new name nebplntbmp.mdl which should work.

You CANNOT rename mdl files! As Terra said, the original name is hardcoded into the file. If the hardcoded name do not much the filename you cannot use the mdl.

The bmp.mdl files contain the filename of themself inside the file. Renaming a bmp.mdl files will create a corrupt bmp.mdl file and Alleg will crash, if it tries to load that renamed bmp.mdl file.
