they will only be in the middle of your screen if they aren't moving relative to you, you need to aim where they are going to be, so this often means, shooting where they are currently not, which means they will not be in the middle of your screen, and under some circumstances, they can be hiding behind your gauges....
its called leading your target...

Before you do any of the above.

1) Get a nice mouse/trackball/joystick

2) Choose either a quadratic or linear response, see which feels more comfortable.

linear response is the way to go. timing quadratic movement will consume most of your brain capacity

Newb question: what is quadratic/linear response?

I was going to post an explanation ...
Evincar wrote:QUOTE (Evincar @ Sep 24 2007, 12:10 AM) quadratic response is for people who use very low sensitivity and want to travel high distances without moving their mouses a lot. this is acomplished by trading precision. since this is no FPS, and you have limited turning ratios, linear suits alleg better: the only benefit from quadratic response is that you can make full rotations with less movement, which has no point on a game like alleg. I use a low sensitivity, just enough to let me maneuver up to max roll in any direction with one go, and linear of cousre.
But evincar did it for me /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />

the more you move the mouse, the higher the responsiveness.

For example, this is by no means accurate, and depends on the acceleration ratio, but the principle is the same always:

you move in your mouse (physically) at speeds

1 _2 _3 _4 _5 _

you move in linear (in proportion)

1 _2 _3 _4 _5 _

you move in quadratic

1 _3 _5 _ 8 _ 12 _

but if you move the mouse slow, it will count as if you do 1_1_1_ (or any low number combination) instead of 1_2_3_, so with linear you move the same one way or the other, but with quadratic it might screw up your aim. Any way, quadratic response is not supposed to be used when you have a small movement grid: most mouse movement you need to do could fit in a capped box of 600 * 600, which most mouses, even with low sensitivity and linear response (quadratic response is also called ''mouse acceleration" if seen from windows) can reach easily. it will only take out of your precision.

Or, more graphically : here's a quick-n-dirty sketch.

I actually use "teh box" reticule as it gives a slight feeling of no reticule and allows me to see bullets easily. How do you play darts with babies? Aim for the head!

I aim by sense of smell, I can smell the speakers making the bullet contact sound.
