Short story. I got in a dogfight with Ozzy. It didn't last long. He boosted away in his shiny IC heavy int and I got a free pod ride back to my base. He entertained me on the way with a couple of PM's that informed me that I did not know how to aim and that I should learn. I agree. I wish I had the time and flexibilty to enroll in cadet, but RL does not allow me to do so. Any suggestions on practice? Dogfighting during a game does not seem all that effective. I think all that does is give me free pod rides and increases Ozzy's KB.

Thanks

Best way to learn aiming: get a couple people and start a DM (deathmatch game). In game options turn friendly fire ON. When you start playing, only dogfight with people on your own team. You won't see a targeting reticule when targeting a friendly ship, so you have to watch your bullets.

Better yet is to make sure you're using the proper device for flight control: mouse or joystick. Get off of the default keymapings and map all of your thrusters and 0% and 100% thrust only. Then play Training Mission 6 til your eyes bleed. And all of that is just for a good basic aim. What what the others have said once you can hang in TM6 indefinitely.

Trying to get good by playing pickup games/DM takes forever unless you already have a natural inclination towards shooting lead. You need something easier and has less pressure involved to start out with.

I would even suggest jumping onto R4, getting a server by yourself and then dropping a series of probes. You can then turn around and try to kill them. Make sure FF is on and try to kill the probe on the first pass. As you get better you can scatter the probes so you have to fly at them at different angles. It should train you to watch the bullets and see where they land.

Small stationary targets are hard to hit, it's easier said than done.

You can always ask me for a 1 on 1 training session moose. Just PM me in-game or here on the boards and we'll set up a time

Do a lot of deprobing. Try to hit the probe with your first shot, instead of shooting and then moving your bullets into the probe.

Take it a step further and don't aim your ship at the probe. Then swivel to aim as your momentum carries you past.

Another thing to practice. When docking fly next to the door so it is at your side. Do this at speed. While moving sidethrust and "slide" into the door. This will help you get a feel of how your ship handles.
