That's horrible, juck, and that's even worse, para. Good lord.
Lock vector, you press L (at least it's L with the keyboard mapping downloaded from allegacademy). It basically means autopilot, but instead of going to your target (base, ship, rock, aleph, sector, whatever), this autopilot just continues going where you were going, no matter where you point your crosshair to.
So you can fly straight at, say, a rock. And then you lock vector, you can spin around all you want you'll eventually hit that rock.
But you can also thrust if I recall correctly, it won't cancel lock vector.
Also I think lock vector is subject to your thrusters' limitations. Since your reverse/side thrusters don't have as much top speed as your forward thruster, if you go to speed, lock vector, then turn 180 degrees your speed will lower to the max speed of your reverse thruster.
