What kind of power does side-thrusting have in combat, and do different faction's ships side-thrust at different speeds?

Thanks. Additionally, is it advantageous to ram freindly cons in order to make them get to the asteroid faster? I know to avoid them when they are about to plant, but if you're escorting them, does ramming get them there faster?
