The sought after helium-3 isotope can be extracted from He-3 asteroids by miners to be used as an energy source. It equals wealth, with which the factions fund their technology projects, ships, and everything else.
Helium Asteroids
A sector generally has four helium asteroids. They are identified as "He", followed by a number. The bar above it's structure is the remaining helium-3 which can be harvested. It slowly regenerates over time.
The image above shows an asteroid with almost no He-3 left. The miner to it's right would be responsible for that.
