juckto/IGH

You are going to get really confused with orders. People are going to yell at you to do stuff, command you to fly all over the map, and complain when you "don't do what you're supposed to". What you need to realise is that, 95% of the time, they aren't talking to YOU. You can ignore almost everything until you become a better player.

WARNING: If you ignore orders from your COMMANDER, chances are good that you will get booted. Your commander has bold chat and is the guy at the top of the team list in the game lobby. If you've joined a game without learning your commander's name, it would pay to memorise it as soon as you see his bold chat appear.

There are two kinds of orders: Issued, and Directed.

Issued orders

Issued orders come up in big red letters on your HUD, and are something like:

"Order received from <Player> to <Team 1>: Attack my target! (Press Insert to Accept)"

Anyone can issue an order to anyone else on their team. A lot of the time players will issue an order to the ENTIRE team because it is quicker than being precise. As a direct side effect of this, you will often receive orders from all sorts of people from all different parts of the map, ordering you to do different things. And if you try and accept every single order? Then you'll run around like a headless chicken getting nothing done.

The solution? Ignore most of them.

The ones that you shouldn't ignore are ones that are issued to you specifically. They will have your name in the order, such as:

"Order received from <Player> to <YOUR NAME>: Pick up <Player>. (Press Insert to Accept)"

The ones you SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT IGNORE are ones issued to you specifically, from your COMMANDER. Such as:

"Order received from <COMMANDER> to <YOUR NAME>: Pick up Minigun 2. (Press Insert to Accept)"

When you accept the order your ship will autopilot to the location of the order. For example, if someone orders you to pick them up accepting it will autopilot your ship to their escape pod. Accepting an order is "Insert" by default.

Note that if you change your "Accept Order" key in your keybindings you will need to press the new key, even though your HUD will still say "Press Insert to Accept".

Directed orders

Directed orders are things that your Commander communicates by the chat system. This is his main tool to tell his team what he is planning and what he wants you to do, so you should pay attention when he speaks. His chat is in BOLD type, and a different sound effect is played when his messages come up (a "boop" instead of a "beep" sort of noise).

Unfortunately, commanders and veterans nearly always talk to each other in abbreviations. "D sup" for "Defend the Supremacy Centre", "Get on miner o" for "Get on miner offensive (find and attack the enemy miners)", etc. Consult the A-Z index at the end of this Help Menu for a list of common abbreviations used in games.

If you are unsure what the plan is then open a chat message and politely ask. "I'm new. What's the team plan at the moment?"

By paying attention to the commander's plan and doing your part to help out, you will get to work with your teammates in major offensives. Which is a lot more fun than wandering around by yourself until you get killed!
