Ed's Note: This article is meant as a FAQ for the changeover from the old system to the new system. So questions that current players will have like "Do I keep my old rank?"

Q. Can you explain how the AllegSkill system is going to work?
A. Basically, everyone will have two numbers keeping track of their rank: Mu, μ, and Sigma, σ.

μ is your skill rating, and σ is the uncertainty about your rating. New players start off with full uncertainty (8.333 σ) while players that have played thousands of games will have much lower uncertainty (σ stabilises at about 1).

In Helo winning or losing a game results in your rank points going up or down, the amount being modified by how stacked the game was. The same process happens in AllegSkill, except the amount your skill rating changes is modified by sigma.

The less the system "knows" you, the more each game will affect your rank, meaning it might swing up and down a little to begin with. As you play more games the system will "learn more" about your skill and place you more accurately, and eventually you will reach the point that the only way you will be able to gain/lose a rank is by gaining/losing actual skill.

Q. So which number will be displayed as my rank?
A. {{{2}}}

Q. Will team names still display team rank?
A. Placeholder

Q. What rank do newbies start at?
A. New players start with an average rating (μ: 25) but maximum uncertainty (σ: 8.33). So their Conservative rank will be zero

Q. So ... will they still have a newbie tag?
A. Placeholder

Q. Do I get to keep my old rank?
A. No. Ranks wil be recalculated from existing data, using a completely different algorithm and approach than HELO's.

Q. So, will everyone's rank be reset to Intermediate, or something?
A. No. All the data currently available in the ASGS stats database will be used to calculate your rank. If your rank is below 8 but your sigma is low enough for the system to be confident in your skill, your rank will be forced to an (8). The current sigma threshold is 6.25 (although that may change after further analysis of the system).

Note that for most people's sigma has already stablised at one.

Q. My sigma is less than one. What gives?
A. We said that sigma would stabilise at around one, not one exactly. Sometimes it will be a bit more, sometimes it will be a bit less. Don't sweat it.

Q. My rank is entirely too high, why is this?
A. Because you are just that awesome.
