BunnyWabbit started work on this and I added my own draft of a new streamlined basic manual.

This will be put in the F1 help menu, all of which will be slowly reworked.

Here it is.
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/ ... sp=sharing

The beginning is by Bunny, my stuff start at slide 18.
We need your feedback!

The "quick start guide" document contains 50+ pages with walls of text...

You better cut it down to a few short infomation videos (slide show), which enrich/replace the training missions:
Basic flight controls (1-2 minutes)Ship classes/basic loadout screen (launch a ship) (1-2 mins)The map and how to navigate between/within sectors/bases/ripcording/ (2-3 mins)Goal of conquest game mode (2-3 mins)

At this point you should be able to join a game. Nobody reads this s#!& when they are new to the game, you want to get into the battle as quickly as possible.

It's nice to have, but it won't help new players getting into the game in the current draft.

is there a way, to import videos in the training missions??

Look again.

My draft deals with which starts at slide #18 IIRC has 11 lean slides on the most basic topics.

Here's the wordiest one:
QUOTE Press the LEFT MOUSE BUTTON in flight mode.
Bullets will start streaming from your gun, which by default on a scout is a Gatling Gun.
Congratulation, you’re a real menace now! ;)

A scout with a single gat isn’t a great fighting ship but you have something more
important in your cargo: a Nanite Repair Gun!
Look at the inventory in the bottom right. The gat is in slot 1 and the Nan is in cargo.
Press Control + 1 to switch the gat with the nan. The switch will take a moment.
Now try shooting again.
Congratulations, you can now repair the hull of friendly ships!

“Nanning” is an essential mechanic in Allegiance, like healing in MMORPG’s.[/quote]

Of course I want to make it shorter and clearer as much as possible.
I'd like suggestion on how to do it.

While I like the slide idea, to make more simpler than just reading, it still has too much reading.

You should try to make hyperlinks to videos giving the tutorials of the concepts you are approaching. And put in the slides whatever info you feel is missing from the videos.

No one wants to watch videos for god knows how long.

Start with the basics.

ESC+G+C to see your keys.

Manage the hangar so you can launch and learn how to dogfight.

learn how to load a nanite gun, etc.

Good point regarding esc+, we're planning to have a way for F1 to show you an image of the default keymap.

The loadout screen is so overwhelming I can't begin to imagine how to explain it in a reasonable number of lean slides... I guess I just have to start trying.

My method so far has been is to explain the minimal actions, so just fill cargo with nan and probes, later switch just the main gun.

I'd like to hear what order of actions/lessons you suggest, you don't need to write everything, just give me an idea.

It's hard for us voobs to think like newbs, but that is what we need to do if we are going to help them learn.I try by just encouraging them to use ESC+G+C to see what keys are mapped to whatever. Then I try to get them to use the F keys to see what they function for.
I seems from what I've gathered from the few newbs that do communicate with me that that a small portion of instruction is enough to get them to not be afraid of pressing buttons on their keyboard. ;)

I've been into helping people not be afraid to explore when using computers.Anyone who isn't into tech has a mindset of "don't touch anything unless you know what it's going to do".

It's like they think if they press the wrong key, thier computer is going to implode.

They are also confused when I try to tell them that they can make their own game and play around commanding. You can do that if you don't use the Zone game servers. They don't seem to get the difference.Apparently, they think the Zone servers are the ones they should use,so when they go there they can't create a game that is run by only one commander.

I ran a game by myself last night and a newb showed up and was surprised by my ability to run a game by myself.
I explained the reason, and he seemed encouraged that I could "learn the tech tree" by running a game on my own.

People are interested in this game....they just don't want to spend hours watching videos and reading Wiki's before finding out how to launch a scout and getting into another sector. :P
