So... I have about 90 minutes of flight time now. The game is absolutely stunning. It feels exactly like it should considering:

1999 - Allegiance - nuff said

2014 - Elite: Dangerous alpha release
It feels like a quantum leap. The feeling of flight is amazing, the graphics are gnarly and cutting edge and the audio design of the soundscape is just lovely.
And what's best of all, it's not dumbed down, nor is it a chase-the-cursor M & KB piece of crap like Warthunder, or WoWP. I'm flying with a full CH HOTAS (Fighterstick, Throttle and Pedals) and I'm absolutely loving it.
Some people _are_ playing with M & KB, and doing well, but they aren't having a massive advantage.... more a case that you can learn to play it well with a mouse as well.
Here's a gameplay link to those who haven't been following this. I must say watching it being played doesn't do it justice at all.

Elite: Dangerous
I'm actually more excited for this than Star Citizen. I was all hyped for SC when it was on Kickstarter, but it's gotten bloated and I'm unsure if any of it will be any good. Hopefully both will be amazing, but Elite sounds like it knows what it is and won't try to be anything else.
When does it come out? Kind of lame the Alpha is $200 to get in...

Another one I'm really looking forward to is Enemy Starfighter
Getting a little impatient, though -- all these amazing looking next-gen space sims were announced well over a year ago and none of them are out yet, or even really close to being out.

Seems like you missed Frontier: Elite II (1993) and Frontier: First Encounters (1995)...Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ May 10 2014, 02:31 PM) 1984 - Elite - starts the while 1st person space game genre

Allegiance has even an older history than Elite: Empire/Trek was released in 1972/1973.

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.

The alpha ended up a little crey-crey because it was originally a kickstarter tier. They just wanted a few hundred dedicated testers, but when the first videos came out a _lot_ of people demanded that they let them in "take my money!". They opened the door to more "alpha backers", but couldn't really drop the price so as not to piss of the kickstarter backers who supplied the early funding. Same is true about the premium beta price, but at least that includes every expansion to follow, so it's not a bad deal as such... just a lot of money up front for early access.Bacon wrote:QUOTE (Bacon @ May 10 2014, 08:15 PM) I'm actually more excited for this than Star Citizen. The less said about FFE the better, but Frontier was probably the greatest game ever made - much better than Elite.pkk wrote:QUOTE (pkk @ May 10 2014, 07:00 PM) Seems like you missed Frontier: Elite II (1993) and Frontier: First Encounters (1995)...

It was a feat of programming, but for some reason it never hooked me. The epic open universe and endless scope will be kicked up several degrees now though. I'm really looking forward to sightseeing in the solar system, and then heading out to the wild border worlds and beyond.tsubaki_sanjuro wrote:QUOTE (tsubaki_sanjuro @ May 12 2014, 11:30 PM) The less said about FFE the better, but Frontier was probably the greatest game ever made - much better than Elite.

Having spent countless hours test and logging issues for WGL mod (Operation Flashpoint), then VBS1, and then ACE for nothing other than the satisfaction of making either the military or the next players game more enjoyable, TROLOLOLOLOLMFAO at testers having to shell out money just to get access to the game and do the @#(! work as well.Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ May 12 2014, 09:10 AM) The alpha ended up a little crey-crey because it was originally a kickstarter tier. They must all log off at the end of the day and pay a fortune for some of the most punishing Bondage (short of death) at the cruddiest brothel in town to hopefully get aids and die of a cold.
I cant think of any other explanation.
