I know crazy things happen in a recession (Finland got a redneck racist party with 19% of the vote), but is Bachmann really a serious contender for POTUS?

I don't think she's actually a serious contender.

Here in the US we have an issue with the media, which is the conservatives have for the past 20 years or so accused the media of a left-wing bias. As a result, they are VERY VERY VERY reluctant to call out conservatives or be critical in any way. It makes me nuts when they give equal time to cooks like Bachman but don't point out all of her lies, ignorance, and just plain wrongheadedness. Not about her opinions, but about basic facts that she keeps getting wrong. Same thing with Palin.

I think with Palin and Bachman they are doubly afraid of perceived bias since it would be called sexism as well, which Palin we know is not afraid to use to her advantage.

At one point in the last campaign, Palin had this line where she kept saying "Whats the difference between a hockey mom and a bulldog? Lipstick!" In a stump speech some time later, Obama was pointing out that McCain was calling things "change" which were actually basically the same policies of the previous administration.

QUOTE "You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."

"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."

"We've had enough of the same old thing."
The McCain campaign took this as a reference to Palin, and accused Obama of calling her a pig, and there were accusations of sexism etc.

So, tl;dr she is not a serious contender in real life. In the MEDIA she is portrayed as a contender (just like Donald Trump was) because she is conservative and therefore can't be criticized too harshly without perception of bias.

An interesting read Adept. Bits of it were hyperbole, pointless and/or terribly biased but there was good stuff in there too.

I only heard about her first a couple of days ago via the BBC website.

Edit : we voted Boris Johnson as mayor of London, you could write an article as long as that one easily on why he was a bad choice. But he has charisma of a sort despite being a bit of an oddball. So yeah, it could happen.

HOLY AN ENTIRE ROLLING STONE ARTICLE WITHOUT A SINGLE USE OF THE WORD "SEMINAL"!!!!!

(sorry, bit of a slam on them from the 1990's when EVERY article used that word.)

QUOTE Bachmann was born Michele Amble in Waterloo, Iowa, to a pair of lifelong Democrats, but grew up in tiny Anoka, Minnesota.
"Tiny" Anoka, MN is actually just a northern suburb of the Twin Cities a short drive away from me. It's best known for being the "Halloween Capital of the World" in the 80's, 90's and early 00's and for spending it's ENTIRE police budget either stopping people from driving around town with their stereos blazing on the weekend (cruising) or dredging the river for bodies twice a month because someone ELSE disappeared mysteriously.

Bachmann is as nutty as that one religious fanatic chick whose political campaign basically consists of "Masturbation is WRONG!" and not much else.

She is bona fide insane and could not pass an MMPI.

Her as Commander in Chief would probably be enough to turn me into a serial killer with her voter base as my targets.

Here's hoping she pulls a "Trump" and steps out of the race because someone finds the skeletons in her closet too.

americans,

what the $#@! is going on? how has an eminently sane, rational, fair and honest political viewpoint (conservatism) been hijacked by idiots like bachmann, palin and their respective staffers? agri read this utter $#@!ing bollix earlier:

QUOTE “She’s the right person at this time,” he said. “If you look back at Churchill’s time, in 1938 Churchill was unelectable, in 1940 he was indispensable.

“I can’t see her sitting this one out,” he said. “The stakes are too high. It goes back to 1940. Can you see Churchill sitting it out? It’s unthinkable. Can you see George Washington in 1776 sitting it out? Unthinkable. He wanted to be back on his farm but they said we need you to be president of the republic.”
agri demands that the guilty be removed from the human race, and reclassified as homo bardus. alternatively he demands they be sentenced to attend gay pride every year, in leather.

love,

agri

boris was an MP, a prominent journalist, has a very good degree from the best university in the country, is very funny and (most importantly) has not been the disaster that a lot of people claimed he would be as mayor, in fact he could well beat livingstone again next year (agri probably will be voting boris, after voting ken last time). he also does things like this. to compare him to someone like bachmann is absurd.

As for Palin, blame McCain. I think she would have remained a crazy nobody if he hadn't lifted her from obscurity onto the national scene.

As for Bachmann, she almost seems like a Palin clone, right down to the crazy religious views. Sadly, there's a significant portion of the US that shares those crazy views. Remember the moral majority? the Christian Coalition? There's a sizeable voting block of these crazies and both Palin and Bachmann represent their views.

I suspect Bachmann is polling well right now because she's relatively unknown. Being a female doesn't hurt either, as I think our country is dying to elect a female if we can find one to run who's not nuts. Hopefully once people see a bit more of her, they'll realize she's nuts and she'll end up being about as popular as Palin. Which is to say, fairly popular, but not popular enough to actually win anything.

Well, it's an article in the Rolling Stone, so I expected a lot of ribbing. Still a good read, and much of what was said seemed to check out from other sources.
