That IS obsidian. About 6-7 stacks of it. Luckily I didn't have to farm it myself I just bought it. We have the Iconomy plugin.

A friend of mine built a 1:1 scale Correllian Corvette. In Survival. Without spawning/buying anything. It was most impressive.

Minimally, what kind of system does one need to run Minecraft well? I mean, yes, it will run on a toaster, but what do I need to have, at minimum, if I want to turn all the nice graphics options to maximum and still play with a good and stable frame-rate?

Well, I have an ATI HD 4650 (4081MB) and it seems to run it just fine on maximum settings
It does slow down a little when generating and under certain circumstances where many many blocks aren't occluded.
