I have an opportunity to stand up a server in a data center to host an alternative game server with (from what I understand very very good bandwidth. A firend of mine hosts servers. All he needs to now is what the typical monthly usage stats are and then if those are within his comfort levels he will hook me up. I would need to know what other things I would have to setup. Can some one who admin one of our servers contact me and provide me typical bandwidth stats.
Also where can i get all the info for setup.
Help me and I can probally get us a decent machine.
New Allegiance Server
I can't help you on the bandwidth front, but the game was designed to operate on a 56K modem. I doubt the monthly usage is high. I can help you setup everything and get you rolling if you need any assistance.

Thanks Striker. When I get the data usage I will be able to move forward. I have left a message for Mr Chaos and Peet hoping they have those numbers. I do not want to take advantage of a friend . He get bandwidth for free because these folks owe him 25 k worth of work. However he has other buissnes venture. If I give him the correct numbers then he can plan accordingly.
"If I could remove all the people from the earth I think are stupid... would I be the only one left ? "Sunt superis sua iura -ovidThere is no fee per say. However, there is a licensing fee a dedicated server provider has to pay to Microsoft for every Windows server they rent out. This is in lieu of spending tens of thousands on "owned" licenses that have to be recycled every time a customer cancels a server.deathgoat wrote:QUOTE (deathgoat @ Jan 11 2011, 09:28 PM) i heard there is some monthly microsoft server fee, otherwise i/we could prob get one in ohio for free/almost free
Most providers choose to pass the fee along to the customer. Others build the fee into their monthly price and don't tell you about it.

i would wait for te and aarm to respond, te runs or owns stripe and it has always been a laggy pos server, while planet has had its ups and downs it mostly has been rock solid as far as lagspiking and stuff. I remember te posted his up/down bandwidth and it was really high, but i dont remember if aarms was even higher or if its just a routing issue that stripe has.

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.
I also found MrC's post on solap's bandwidth usage:

edit: its obviously the connections and not the bandwidth or even the hardware. Your home connection is absolutely going to be slower then even a for @#(! data center (it comes down to money and traffic rights)
edit2: My monthly allotment is 4000G Total fyi
