I wish you had come back so I could explain why.
Here are some logs that should match your own:

Code: Select all

12/16/10 17:55:08: History@ACE (Team 1): johnbarman drop shield NOW
12/16/10 17:55:17: History@ACE (JohnBarman(0)): goto waypoint in Bragi
12/16/10 17:55:28: History@ACE (Team 1): GET AWAY FROM ME OR I WILL BOOT YOU
12/16/10 17:56:25: History@ACE (Team 1): $#@! now you got me eyed because I had too much speed entering leugh
12/16/10 17:56:29: History@ACE (Team 1): @#(! $#@!!
12/16/10 17:59:51: History@ACE (Team 1): JOHN
12/16/10 17:59:59: History@ACE (Team 1): DO NOT COME NEAR ME
12/16/10 18:00:09: HQ (Team 1): JohnBarman(0) was booted from the team by the team leader.
12/16/10 18:00:09: HQ (all): History@ACE has booted JohnBarman(0) from team Team 1.
12/16/10 18:00:14: History@ACE (Team 1): @#(!
12/16/10 18:00:21: GriM_ReaPer@BS (all): he was leading me
12/16/10 18:00:22: GriM_ReaPer@BS (all): Doah.
12/16/10 18:00:29: History@ACE (all): exactly
I am normally not a particularly evil person and here is what happened:
I was in a slow ship capable of taking over enemy bases by surprise. I was trying to hide from the enemy by lowering my signature and avoiding the enemy. Your shield (and, I presume, your missiles) made your scout more visible to the enemy than my HTT. An enemy had spotted you and was following you in order to find me. So I shouted at you and finally booted you to avoid being seen.

So the lessons are:
1. Read the chat!
2. If you have eye (a picture of an actual eye on your screen) do not give away HTTs, stelth bombers, stealth fighters or other players trying to stay hidden.
3. You can effect your own signature by lowering shields and missiles.
4. Booting is not allways malicious. Don't take it too personally.
5. If you do get booted you can come back using another call sign.

See you in game I hope

I introduced this person to the game a few days ago. I'll poke him so he'll read the thread. :)

I take it by the log that you weren't using voice? Having play countless hours in squad based games and often as squad leader, I've found you can't get anything across w/o using voice (who cares what anyone sounds like). I mean not all people read the chat text, and really they shouldn't need to as it distracts from ones surroundings. At least as squad/team leader, seems imperative to use voice. Just my 2¢ observation as I figure this game out :)

There is no spoken/microphone chat built into mumble. There are some "voice chats" you can trigger (built in sounds you can broadcast to your team, stuff like "Attack Miners!" and "Affrimative" and so on). In this case, there was no applicable voice chat. If you look at this line:

QUOTE 12/16/10 17:55:17: History@ACE (JohnBarman(0)): goto waypoint in Bragi[/quote]

History sent an order to John to move away. Presumably, all John had to do was press insert and let the autopilot take over, and he would be in the right place.

In squad games all the squads use teamspeak or mumble or somesuch. Its not common in pick up games for the entire team to be on, especially newbies who might not even know it exists.

Oh yeah, no excuse on not reading the orders, it stands out and always should be read and followed.
Really? no built in voip-type-system at this point? That's unfortunate :(
But thanks for the clarification :)

The VOIP things that could be integrated without building one from scratch are such a headache due to Microsoft's quirky license of Alleg and the particular VOIP license that any VOIP for Alleg would have to be coded from scratch. And since the development team is not paid (We're all volunteers) and there are more pressing issues to be worked on, it's not going to happen anytime soon since it's a massive effort.

Well I'm fond of XMPP but have never integrated it into anything. Less time programming and far more time modeling and animating (where my work shines). Apart from no clue on said MS licensing issues, maybe someone with expertise in the field will one day wonder in and pick it up if legally possible. Kk :)
Anyway, just thought it had integrated voice already since there was a mention of it in one of the official training videos "press key to send short voice message" or some such mention. Maybe he was referring to the game wav files? But he didn't mention that but only said voice. But guess that's not what it was.

No, you're thinking of allegiance "Voice Chats" which are sounds you can broadcast to your team, or everyone, or a group of players, or one specific player (depending on who you set your chat recipient to) using a couple keystrokes. Its actually a great target designation system, for example, with two keystrokes (`5) I can designate a target for my entire team, and I need a maximum of 3 keys to broadcast any "voice chat" to my team, and 5-6 will usually allow me to designate a specific sector or player as the recipient and send the voice chat I want.

Next time you play, start a side server or join one of the newbie servers so you don't piss everyone else off, press the ` (backtick) key and scroll through the VC menus.
