Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

Could you use somethnig like starcraft zerg as inspiration, or perhaps some of the OH models, so you can include some ground based structure/nest perhaps?
The MS originals all have something more than jsut a scenic view and the faction name, logo and motto, they have a picture of a structure base of that faction, often ground based.
