So I was just wondering what hoops I would have to jump through in order to become an AFS mentor. I feel like I should give something back to the community, and I enjoy helping newbs so thought I might check out AFS. I may not know all the exact numbers and perks of all the factions, but I certainly know enough to answer most questions.

There are no hoops, just Two Weeks ™.

@Help might actually be an easier way, but for @AFS talk to your/our squad, as I believe those are [generally] assigned per squad.

Frankly, at first we just picked people who applied through the Cadet Instructors forum basically (who had decent experience).

We need a process to Add AFS mentors I think, but its not sorted yet.....

Edit: I would start as a CDT instructor though (as Fuzz said - ask your squad about that)

Cadet instructors should have a very solid grasp of the game because giving incorrect information is is really bad If you can't answer stuff like this and explain why certain things are best practices without looking them up you probably shouldn't consider being a cadet instructor quite yet.
That doesn't mean that you can't assist new pilots, it just means that you need to bone up on a good number of things before you start teaching pilots.

Let's start with turrets - one of many new players' favorite things.

When would you NOT fire while on a Bios bomber's turret?

If FF is on what must you be careful of when you are a turret gunner?

What is the FIRST thing you shoot if it is present when coming through an aleph as a turret gunner?

What should you be aware of if you are the gunner in a TF bomber as your pilot is killing the base? Why?

The bomber pilot or commander has asked you to give up your turret seat because someone with a higher KB should be gunning. Should you? Why or why not?

What is special about the Command Wing? What other chat wings are special and why?

Which mounted items affect ship signature at all times?

and some harder stuff that's necessary:

Which faction has scouts that can be ripped to? How much do they cost?

At roughly what range will an EWS1 spot a TP1? How would you place EWS probes if you suspect the enemy team is about to try a TP Probe drop near one of your techbases?

Which faction can use dropped tech without the requisite techbase? What should you always remember to do BEFORE YOU DOCK WITH TECH for other factions?

The enemy blows up your only Expansion techbase and you are still in a heavy interceptor. What must you make absolutely certain you do not do?
