Hello again
I'm glad to say @HELP presense on the newbie servers seems to be a very good idea. The only thing that bugs me is this.
The default controls are USELESS. I'm forced to start with explaining abou the controls with every new pilot. It's not very easy to find the WASD controls from the wiki either, let alone get the new player to go download it, unzip it to the right place and then come back
Change the default controls to the WASD suggested in the wiki please. Screw the training missions, I haven't yet met a newbie who would have tried them anwyay.
Change the bloody default keymap already
I did. Before I ever joined a PUG. I found them to be real helpful too, especially that last one, when I finally got into the game. Am I that abnormal?Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ Dec 22 2009, 06:49 PM) Change the default controls to the WASD suggested in the wiki please. There are so many competing schools of thought out there, that logically somebody has to be deluded. I have a feeling it's me.

Perhaps 'unique' would be a better choice,Jerkato. At any rate, I want to say how pleased I was to have spotted that newbie server game with Adam4. I couldn't stay long, but I learned a lot in a very short time. Thx again, Adam4

Many folks do rely on the training missions. They want to get at least a small handle on the games before they long into the player servers. (I'd even go so far to say that such folks are more likely to be the kind of player we want to attract and retain - they're obviously not the type to just jump head-first into a live game and expect to pwn.)
(even if they do roxxors at Starcraft)

I did the training missions and I still use the defaults. They are far from useless. Although adding to the default (like target bomber etc) is plausible without breaking the training.
I decided to relive the days gone by in my new blog.

Remember, what I say is IMO always. If I say that something sucks, it actually means "I think it sucks" OK?

Except the big about dorjan being jelly, that's just spidey's ego.

I use the defaults too, but was afraid to say it for fear of mockery......
Although saying that - a substantial number of controls are mapped to my joystick........
Then if you think changing keybindings to a new default is a grand idea:
a) Check that the training mission won't be broken by whatever key setup YOU prefer
b) Find out the appropriate place to bring this up, Adam isn't going to be a good choice since this is a code change of some kind
c) Go make sure TE is on board with this or you will have wasted your time which tends to lead to one becoming angry and disgruntled
d) Make sure to add/change/update all references to the keys everywhere AND make sure that their is some warning for the training mission just in case
e) Publish your work, and get SaiSoma to put it on his beta server to let others break it until perfect
or
You can learn the default keybinding settings since most new players aren't going to spend time to learn/understand how to make keyboard changes given how fresh of a player they are when @help steps in with them. Im all for you telling them a set up you find awesome
but remember it complicates things for the next swinging dick who wants to be helpful. *shrug* I simply tell them "let's check your keybindings first so I don't confuse us both". It tedious tbs but it gets the job done.
MrChaos <--- highly recommends step c being done right away btw
