AVG 8.5 and Avast! no longer works with Allegiance on default settings. This doesn't appear to be the usual 'Failure to connect' error but an actual issue between AVG and Allegiance.exe in it thinking it is a virus/trojan. <--THIS IS A FALSE POSITIVE!

So if you have AVG or Avast! and are experiencing a message coming up with 'An Unknown Error Occured' and also trying to close ASGS gives another error.

SOLUTIONS FOR AVG

I'm using AVG free edition 8.5.421 and there is a way to get Allegiance to work without uninstalling AVG. Add the Xenocode directory to the exceptions list

Open AVG interface
Open Resident Shield menu
Click Manage Exceptions near the bottom of the screen
Click Add path
Find your local Xenocode directory C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\Application Data\Xenocode\
Apply

It worked for me, not sure if it's a general solution though
If you cannot see Local Settings and Application Data etc... then when you reach 'C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername' go to tools -> folder options -> view and then click on 'show hidden files and folder'

SOLUTIONS FOR Avast!

tray icon -> On-Access Protection Control -> Standard shield -> Сustomize -> Advanced -> Add 'C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Xenocode\*' to the list

Then log on - once you've successfully logged on, you can reactivate Standard Shield (tray icon -> resume provider -> Standard Shield) - it only causes a problem when logging on. So you only need to turn the scanner off for 10 seconds :)

Does this work with vista? Or just XP?

I'm gonna wait a couple days before trying this out to see if anyone has any side effects with this...

It appears that AVG is not the only Anti-Virus program that is detecting this. I run Avast! and it also is detecting the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Xenocode\Sandbox\2.2.3337.18747\2009.02.19T16.33\Native\STUBEXE\@PROGRAMFILES@\Microsoft Games\Allegiance\ALLEGIANCE.EXE

Win32:Trojan-gen

Virus/Worm

I have submitted this to Avast! as a incorrect detection. Hopefully they will review and correct the issue on their end.

Your fix worked for me. I have AVG free and Windows XP Pro.

Note, you will have to make sure you can see all hidden and system files. Otherwise, AVG won't show the Local Settings folder when you click Manage Exceptions.

Death, if your using AVG and Vista then interesting because normally that was a problem. And also the fix should work unless you believe Xenocode are spreading Trojans which is a possibility.

Chak is there some way in Avast! to handle exceptions so you can do the AVG solution for Avast! ?

Regarding Avast! I just actually Stop all On Access scanning and then log into alleg and play. Then when I'm done, I just restart all of the On access scanners. It seems to work fine.
