Alright, so Psych brought up a point in IRC earlier: The Viper Mark II outclasses the Viper Mark VII. I'll post what he said:

i think that if you fix the 3rd gunmount and maybe increase the ammo of the craft it will work

I've no idea but perhaps the 3rd gun mount is farther from center than the others.

Viper Mark II:
Max Speed reduced from 425 to 400
Ammo reduced from 3000 to 2000
HP Reduced from 350 to 300
Viper Mark VII:
Max Speed increased from 350 to 375
Ammo reduced from 2750 to 2250
HP increased from 300 to 400
Energy changed to 1600 and 0 regen
Third (Center top) gun changed to a 'Light KEW' that runs off of energy instead of ammo and does slightly less damage than KEW1
Viper Mark II:
Max Speed reduced from 425 to 400
