I think it's silly that News items are accompanied by the poster's avatar. This has created forum-lawyer issues in the past (Ozzy's "kinky" avatar) and is not really meaningful to the news item.
Images are worth a thousand words, so what about using that slot to accompany the words? /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

So admins/ZLs should change their avatar every time they post a news item to make sure it matches?

No, that'd be silly. I thought the easiest thing could be removing the avatar and having images embedded with [img] tags if the poster is so inclined.
Still I thought about this again. While I still think the source of a news item is less important of the news item itself, a news item with the TigerEye/BlackViper/ImmZ avatar receives much more attention so it may have a place there after all.

A simple Checkbox "Do not show avatar" for news posts if the poster feels like it, and if you want to feel fancy you could add a "Custom Avatar [url here]" so badp would be happy because admins exist to make random people happy or unhappy so instead you could ban him for 2 hrs.
Beyond the clock tower.
