How do I setup to use mouse+keyboard?

Well at the moment I'm just trying to use the keyboard cause I haven't a clue how to set up the mouse as well.

Sorry I'm very new to this game.

Hit 0 on the number pad to active the mouse stick.

Advanced Lesson - Remapping Your Controls

The important setting is "Toggle Mouse Control" which, by default, is toggled by Numpad Zero. This will turn the mouse into a virtual joystick.

Whats the best view? Behind the ship or in the cockpit?

I prefer cockpit.

Don't forget to use the side-thrusters with the mouse, it helps avoid incoming fire and gives better maneuverability when docking and stuff.

Space-bar makes a great booster button and use G to disable the virtual joystick to get cursor which you can then hover over the mini-map (F7) to get information on where the action is.
