I propose that:

- all wing channels show drone orders

- only commander may change the wing of a given individual (or the whole team)
- reduce and expand wing list to:
- Command (clearly, potential to designate backseat)
- Attack
- Defend
- Miner Hunter
- Minder Defender
- Recon (scouting & probing)
- Support (all inclusive wing demanding situational awareness from player)

- said individual should get a red message indicating which channel he has been switched to

Pros:
- easy way to give general stances for the player, as opposed to tell each one what to do through typing
- easier way for semi-noobs and in some cases voobs to know what they are supposed to do
- good way to know who to boot /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> for an inappropriate job

Cons:
- Lazy comms, will set wings initially and might forget to adjust them in game
- Some semi-noobs and in some cases voobs may adhere to orders strictly and fail to respond to a "everyone defend" order
- that is why a "change everyone's wing option" should be implemented (perhaps from the column header?)
- Comms may choose not to use this feature and it might throw off the players
- that is why a support (aka everything) wing should be the default for joining players and for commanders who do no want to assign wings

DISCLAIMER:
This is no substitute for pilot awareness, it just gives the commander a more coherent tool to direct the team with.

Comments welcome
Implementation desired

If squads don't use wings, pickup games won't use wings. Push everyone to command and be happy.

In squad games most players should know what to do, but in pick up games awareness and responsibility is a problem (inculding myself), in my humble opinion.
I love it.

Only way to fix that is to remove the stupid within people. Last I checked, not possible. Sorry /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

well, no
you see the more fit to survive you are, the more often you die from sector overload, as nothing else kills you.
Mad? Oh yes, quite mad.

Ok, aside from individual player skill/awareness/idiocy as I previously stated and as you all reiterated, I think this suggestion is comparably better to what we have now.
We have an outdated system that is a useless extension of the game, confuses the newbies, and annoys everyone having to switch to command everytime to see drone orders.
It seems to me optimal to use an abandoned aspect of the game and make it useful (to whoever deems it so).
Code wise it should not be too difficult, as it is not a new feature, but a tweak of an existing one.

Edit:

The conclusion that pickup games wont use it is a bit liberal, but what I'm trying to say is, better to have the option than not.

and yes, all the wings (including support) should see drone orders.

The last 3 wings CAN see drone orders, we decided to not add it for the rest in case people want (for whatever reason) a channel w/o the orders. Since you will be the only person using a special wing, feel free to use one of the last 3 wings. Should be plenty of room.
