Update your drivers, video and sound specifically.
Apparently a California "cabin" is any place more than 4 blocks from a McDonalds.

a. What is the problem?
b. How do I fix it?

If it helps, it freezes when it says "joining mission" (after joining game and the second message.)

Download and isntall the most curretn DX9 version:

Make sure you use the correct language for your system.

Download and install driver updates for your video card and your sound chip. Old, buggy drivers often cause weird problems.
