Getting into the game isn't a problem. Once I launch, I am able to control my craft and fire my guns. The problem is, when I launch, I get a view of my ship leaving a station, then I switch to a view w/HUD of the station receding. If I fire my guns, I hear the sound, but don't see anything. If I hit F12, I randomly get a view of the front or rear of my craft; either way I can see my guns firing in the direction they ought to. If I map one of the view controls, be it 'rear' or 'left' or what have you, pressing the key I mapped it to does nothing. If I target an enemy, and turn to face it, I get the colored circle, but I'm moving away from my enemy instead of toward it, and obviously I can't hit it with my guns if they're firing behind me.

My being a total newb isn't helping. Please, a little help here.

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you're describing...

When you've targeted an enemy, and have turned in his direction (so that he's now in your front view), you're still going in another direction? Am I understanding you correctly?

In the first few seconds of doing the above, it's expected that you'll continue on the previous vector for a few seconds - your ship has mass and it takes a bit to overcome the initial vector before you're moving along the lines of the new vector. Think of it as running and changing directions on ice... you'll slide a bit in the old direction until the new direction gets some "traction". Each ship has a different mass, and some recover from a direction change more quickly than others.

If your direction continues on for more than several seconds, perhaps your vector lock is on? Vector Lock permits you to fly in one direction while turning in another direction without affecting/changing your vector. The default key for toggling it on and off is "L".

You might want to have a look at the Crash Course to get a basic idea of flight controls, etc.

BTW - Welcome to the game. Also - a minor point... no biggie... the more appropriate forum for this type of question is probably the Gameplay forum. Helpline is intended for folks who are having technical issues with getting the game to work for them. Like I said.. no biggie. /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />

Keymappings for various POV views don't work. You can only look forward while in cockpit unless you have a joystick that has a working POV hat.

Also a common problem is that sometimes ships get stuck in the direction they were going once they enter base. Try hitting your ESC key a few times and see that fixes the problem.

it seems like his view is stuck backwards.

Do you have a joystick?

Try pressing numpad zero and turning your ship with the mouse to orient it properly. Or something.

Figured it out! I had a joystick installed but not connected - for some reason when it wasn't connected it registered as having the hat in the down position, instead of just being disabled.

I have a Thrustmaster USB Top Gun Rev2 joystick, and, as far as I know, the POV hat is set to basic speed controls. Still, it CAN be re-mapped.
