1. The programme is not required except as an entry requirememnt into most (if not all) squads). You will however have more understanding of the game and hence have more fun if you complete the cadet course.

2. The vast majority of the course is based on forum and academy reading. You will be expected to wear your @CDT-A/B tag in game and most weeks there are specific ships that you should be flying.

3. It is hugely beneficial to your ability to play and have fun.

4. I did cadet so long ago that the modern incarnation is pretty much unrecognisable. I enjoyed it and it was very useful though, and it's better now /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

It's not required, but it's highly recommended, and probably the fastest/easiest way to both get up to speed on the game and get cranky vets off your back about newb mistakes. I believe it's also a requirement for the ACS course, so even if you only have the smallest intension of commanding in the future, cadet will be a good first step.

It's a self study program, so don't worry about the time so much. The course lasts 8 weeks, but it's basicially just a collection of posts which focus on one aspect of the game each week. You're given some information to read, and some things to try on your own time, as well as a place to ask questions and compare notes with the other cadets.

The program is HIGHLY beneficial. It was one of the first things I signed on for when I joined, and it really helped me to improve my understanding of the game quickly. You do get out of it what you put in, but it is really zero commitment outside of simply showing up, reading, and playing the game whenever you have time.

Another benefit is the private forum that you get access to. In there, you can ask ANY question and get detailed answers from the instructors. For 8 weeks, you have a decent sized staff of veteran players dedicated to helping you learn the game /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I just finished it (this month, actually; check out my rockin' signature pin). lol.
Anyways, basically just echoing what everyone else said:

2. Requirements are what Raveen said; they're not exactly strenuous requirements. It helps a lot to be active though; get in plenty of practice each week based on what your lesson is, read the Cadet forum often, post ANY questions you have (these Cadet admins, thankfully, will answer even the dumbest thing you can ask).

3. I've been kind of swamped with exams lately; I haven't had the time to play a single game since I graduated. But even while I was still taking the course, I knew much more of what I was doing, and didn't feel like a complete waste of space. I highly recommend it.

4. Everybody was really friendly, and fantastically helpful. There is so much helpful material in the program (135 pages in PDF format, actually; you get that if you pass the final exam ^^). Plus, of course, the answers to all the questions people have, which just expands on everything more. The exam was lengthy in my opinion, but I have attention deficit hyperactive disorder, so I guess I'm just an oddball lol. You learn so much information, and you'll think "Why should I even care from which direction Proximity Mines deploy from my ship?? INTS FTW" But then you get into your Scout and manage to pod 3-4 people with a single proximity minefield. (bwahaha, if you want to know which direction Proximity Mines deploy from your ship, you'll have to take Cadet!!) Participating as much as you can is, of course, the best, but I didn't have much time during those 8 weeks to play (even had to take a week off for a service project in another state) but I still got a 96% on my final exam, and I think it has really helped. Everything's very well-taught.

I hope this helps! Take @Cadet so you can get a rockin' graduation sig pin like mine.

I'll just answer about my experiences in Cadet as the rest of the questions have been answered already...

As a first thing doing Cadet really helps you to learn the basics (the high basics) of the game and you learn about a lot of things, that you will not find out (or you will need a lot of time to find out) on your own. It was really fun, and all the instructors were very helpful.
Also it looks like the whole community looks upon you differently once you have done Cadet, and it is also a great place to meet with the other people, who are about at the same level as you are.
It is also a great place the ask all and any questions you have.. and to get the answers fast.

One thing which I think is important, is that you get as much out of Cadet as you put into it. What I mean is, that Cadet is mainly reading and practice, but all of this is on your own. There are no (or at least few) scheduled practices. Thus you get your assignment, but the rest is up to you. I would say, that it is really worth it to put the time in during the Cadet and practice the material regularly as a lot of questions will come up while you are playing, and not while you are reading, thus if you do not play, you will not have many questions to ask. Asking questions is also really important.. if you do not, you will just get the basic material, which is although very good, simply cannot cover all the aspects of the game.
Still even if you do not have the time, to practice regularly during Cadet it is worth to take it. (I for example did not have time to do the practices regularly, which I feel now, and I will undertake doing the practice portion of Cadet on my own now.. to put all that information gathered there into use).

Have fun!
