There's a very good reason for that.

We're on an older version of IPB.

The last time we opened that up for a very short period of time we got a TON of bots in here.

We can't upgrade to the newer version of IPB because it doesn't have the ability for group leaders (read SL's) to manage their own group's membership.

That's a lie:
Bots and rogue search engines ignore robots.txt.

You only stop them by CAPTCHA/blocking IPs/blacklists.

All I can tell you, it works:

Forum Admin only.
There are already addons, which have that feature:

If you're using proprietary forum software, you will often end up with no large modding community. Other software already include the "group admin" feature by default.

Yes, spam bots will ignore robots.txt. But if the forums are not indexed they are not likely to know about the forums, so we will rarely be targeted.

But yeah, not very difficult to keep most bots out.

We need new leadership!

The present imposter government, which was not elected by the people and which is not accountable to the people, must be replaced by a government recognized by the people, elected by representatives of the workers, soldiers and peasants, and held accountable to their representatives

as quoted in The Bolsheviks Come to Power : The Revolution of 1917 in Petrograd (2004) by Alexander Rabinowitch, p. 252
