Pook wrote:QUOTE (Pook @ Feb 18 2007, 02:03 AM) Different Systems ARE being looked at.

None of them are done yet.

In the meantime - "ELO Sucks" threads are going to affect zero change. If you have a better way of doing things let's hear it - in detail - not just another "ELO will never work because I hate it" thread.

This is the same conversation we've had before. My answer is the same now as it was then. If you think a kill / point based system is the way to go... fine. Spell it all out in a proposal. Exact specs for point values and awards, ranks, autobalancing, etc.

OK -- not another I Hate ELO post (I actually don't hate ELO).

I hate GRAVITY. It will never work because I HATE it -- it makes me feel heavy. /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />

Cool.

Let me ask you a question.
I'm a noob with the same problem as suhi, the thread starter.
As I am a noob i can't play in "vet" servers without being shouted at (i don'yt know but i think so, and anyway it would be deserved), and if I try to join a cadet/noob server, like i've done for the first time 15 minutes ago, i get banned (for 60 minutes this time).

So what do i do?
Just because of some rank evaluation malfunction i can't stick with this nick and join cadet/noob servers?

If someone gives me the right answer, i'll be glad.
TY in advance.

Waiting to get unbanned i'll be doing something else, but when i'll be unbanned, things will be the same as before.
hope 2 get an answer soon.

It may be that you have little experience in this game, but you also know that you're not supposed to be on the servers marked "Newbie". That's a rules violation. I'm sympathetic towards anyone in your situation, but when you know you're violating the rules, then you leave us no choice but to break out the ban stick.

Now to answer your question: find a game that is NOT marked "Newbie" and play. Right after you got kicked, I went on to the main server and watched Para accept three newbies in a row. You could have played in that game and you probably would have learned more in that game than you would have in an all-newbie game.

Have you applied for @Cadet? If not, do so. It's a great program and the community will take you more seriously when they see you flying with a @CDT tag. (and they'll be a lot more tolerant that you're still learning because you're showing that you've made a commitment to learn by joining @Cadet.)

If you're still trying to figure basic stuff out, ask somebody to head off to an empty server for a little 1 on 1 instruction. Most folks here would be willing to help. (including me) /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />

I apologize for being that dumb, but somehow i reasoned like "hey, I'm a noob anyway, i don't care what that rank indicator says, i have the right to play here".. don't ask me where that came from, it's just that i'm tired, because i KNEW the "vets doint play in noobs' servers" rule.

Obviously i was wrong, but i was kind of side-thinking...

I get what you say but the fact is not much that others are not tolerant (they are very tolerant instead) or they don't take me seriously, but that i figure out as a veteran when i'm not.
I can't spam chat saying "beware i'm a newbie, don't mind the rank" in fear of an admin that obviously will kick me at first sight generally without asking "wait, is it a real rank or what?"
And anyway it would be kind of annoying to announce every time that i'm not a *real* vet...

I'm not searching for excuses for my dumbness (and for my deserved punishment), i'm searching for a solution that will allow me to be a newbie like the others.
OK, maybe i should have deleted that old account 2 years ago when i couldn't play and have created a new one a few days ago, but as facts are now, there's no escape.

I don't know if you get what i'm saying.

So at this point, unless i make another asgs account i can't join noob servers, right?

- another ASGS account
- not-noob games
Any other ideas, apart from those?

As for cadet program, i'm looking forward to it, but i havend applied yet because i'm packed with work and it wouldn't have been honest to apply without being sure to attend.

Making another ASGS account won't help you. We have protections built into the authentication systems to prevent unsavory characters from attempting to circumvent the system. (I'm not accusing you of such, it's just that trying to do what you suggest won't work because of the built-in protections.)

And yes, I do know what you're saying, and as I said before, I'm sympathetic to the situation, but for many reasons (and I don't know half of them) there isn't an easy solution other than what I've suggested. I'm convinced that you'll be a better player by learning on the main servers than you will on the newbie servers - you can pick up bad habits there that make it hard to unlearn later.

Another really useful tool - Teamspeak. It is soooo much easier for someone to explain to you a (sometimes) complex point about the game than it is to type it. In fact, anything that might require more than just a few words of explanation will generally not be answered - not because people don't want to help, but because the chat isn't a convenient way to do it. At best you'll get incomplete answers.

ELO is better than most everything out there...saying that it is new, hell

Jjb273, here's the technical reason for you non-newbie status in ELO:

The ranking system (usually called 'ELO') was put in place some months ago. It's a system that balances out over time. To calculate appropriate ranks, it needs *a lot* of data. To speed up this process, all players were given a starting rank correlative to the time since their account was created. The longer they have been around, the more you can assume they are experienced players -- particularly in game that takes as long to learn as Allegiance.

Of course there a few players who created accounts, but never used them, and then suddenly come back. These are first overrated by the system, but your rank will adjust to your real experience and skill over time.

Now you might ask why we don't just adjust your rank. Well, for one, there is the problem that we can't really confirm whether you're really new. Some vet could say: "I'm a newbie, reset my rank" and it will screw up the ranking system a little. Besides, it's work for the admins, they are busy enough and it's not really necessary. ELO a self-balancing system, and your rank will soon reflect your actual skill.

Just keep playing on the main servers. We have rules in place to protect any players -- newbies and vets -- from harassment. That's part of the @Alleg's job (the major part is to help newbies, answer their questions, etc.). If you're experiencing really abusive behaviour and no @Alleg is around, send a private message to BlackViper, tell him what happened, when, and on which server. He's the @Alleg Commissioner and will investigate the situation and act on it if necessary.

I feal for you all that had the same problem as me. I know how you feal. I too made a nick about a year ago, never actualy played, then came back. But I found that most of the people here are fairly tollerent of newbies, some arnt, but most are. As long as your respectfull of those that deserve it, and show some signs of general intelligence, youll be fine. My best sugestion is to head on over to the Allegiance Acadamy website and read the _entire thing_. Every last link. I can understand not joining @Cadet, it defiently sounds like an awsome program but (I dont know about you) but I deffinetly dont have the spare time to do it. Full time job and a family dont allow it ^^. But still, even if you just read the entire Acadamy site and then just pay attention to the chat durring games, youll get the hang of it REAL fast. It only took me mabye a month and 20 games to start fealing like I actualy knew what I was doing at least half the time /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

If you have time to read the academy then you have time for Cadet. It's the kind of program where you get out what you put in. It'd be worth doing the course just to get the material and read through it at your leisure later even if you don't do the exam.
