No.
As for the AV there has been a known problem for some time with allegiance somewhere in the directplay code and a few AVs (which it would not work with at all), but we've found it quite hard to investigate/work on these issues as the problem is inconsistent (ones which fail on XP work on vista/win7, it's difficult to get tests done as coders tend not to have the problem AVs).

Keep being surprised then, as it's not a matter of it blocking ports or .exe's access to network functions. It blocks all SSDP transmissions by default for a while ago now, and those are quite crucial to Alleg's network code. So do most other mainstream commercial AV suites.
QUOTE Since the vast majority of people downloading this game are getting it from this site, why not add a warning "anti-virus programs X Y and Z are known to interfere with Allegiance" to the top of the download page? In addition we could post some link to a tutorial on adding an exception for each of the widely used anti-virus programs known to interfere with Allegiance. Ex:
As I said before, the only way to play Alleg with McAfee, NIS or other similar useless pieces of software, is to get rid of them and replace them with something reasonable. The only way to make Alleg work with those AVs is to rewrite it's network code to use something not created in the 90's.
QUOTE It might turn off a few people, but those people would likely have not figured it out on their own and consequently would have uninstalled anyways.
P.S. Sorry for the quadruple post. I heard you need ten before you can private message.
It was mandatory to have proper virus-grads, and other security s/w installed to use my university network. So uninstalling was not an option. Due to my love for the game concept i kept the game without uninstalling it. Over the years i moved from McAfee to avast. Avast also had the same problem.
Thanks for the feedback. Did you post on the HelpLine? That's what it is set up for - to diagnose these kinds of issues and we're very good at it. The AV issue is a known one and we would have had you fixed in no time.
BTW, use Microsoft's Security Essentials as an AV. It's free, pretty good, uses little resources and doesn't interfere with Allegiance.

A while ago I recruited my friend from school into allegiance (this one managed to get it online) He played a game, said it was pretty cool. In the end he wound up quitting. Why? Because the game was too fast for him. Too many things were being done at once. Allegiance is like tossing a baby into the pool and saying, "swim."

It works, as long they have the mammalian diving reflex...

Seems like new players have the same reflex and unlearn it after a few games.

Well, it's not a game for everyone. It has a steep learning curve but it's part of the attraction. It's unlike most other games out there.
Many of us who were thrown in learnt and improved. Anyway there's cadet and other things too though I've heard a lot lately how the cadet of my day is totally different these days. It was much better when BV and others ran it and the vets that were cadet advisers back then. Today it's very sad.
Making it dumber as many are trying to with cc will make it worse as there are heaps of other games out there that @#(! all over it. Alleg is unique. We need to keep it unique.

Why don't you step up and improve it?

Do something and help
actively keeping Alleg unique and alive, instant of complaining all the time.

The complaints are valid, @#(!ty servers due to my location and cc complaints requested as per that thread to keep the game unique as it is and not "proposted" emp, nan2, gauss etc changes. I was a cdt advisor anyway a while back. Been there done that.

You know, there used to be a time where the only servers were US-based, and all euro players had @#(!ty ping. Can you guess how that changed?
Noone non-australian is going to start an australian server because of your whining. So, I guess your options are:
move to a different part of the world, where you'll get a better ping (help) make an australian server happen get used to it leave the game

You can always just load up an older core, including some whose ideas of balance ought to more closely match your (stated) preferences.
