i think it is the textures that really make the models

what res are those textures at? i'm looking at the top of the second close up screen

The original textures weren't made as one UV mapped tex so it's hard to compare. XWA (the game GT is modelling for) likes models to have lots of seperate, small, textures so each part of the ship is likely a seperate texture of anything up to 256^2 (iirc).

No idea what resolution the Alleg converted models are at though.

alleg can do multi textures on one model i think...

Yes it can, but it's a monumentally stupid way to texture a model. Also I'm not sure how well Alleg copes with many multiple texs per model. The most I can think of is 3 for some bases. For XWA you're looking at 20+.

Unfortunately XWA has certain limits to textures in size and color depth(8bit).

It only allows 2^n pixel counts with n between 3 and 8, so the textures can be 256x256 pixels at max. To have a nice detail to the textures therefore requires quite a lot of them. The max number for textures in XWA is 100.

I already scraped that limit with some of my newer models, e.g. my new Warhammer with somewhat around 95 textures .... /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />
