IMHO, Allegiance wont survive without a rewrite. Compatibility issues just won't be solved in time unless a rewrite is made. Additionally, a rewrite would allow easier bug repair, and those wouldn't drive people away either.

Ideally, someone would trick Microsoft into selling the rights for Allegiance to them before releasing such a rewrite. Not only would this give us more independence, but if it is deemed appropriate at the time, a 1$ a month subscription could be put into place to expand the game, make it more accessible, and advertise.

The game needs better graphics. Many people wont play any game unless the graphics are up to date, regardless of the quality of gameplay.
A gfx upgrade is on the way in the next release (dx9 graphics). R5 is coming, we just need more developers to finish the bugs etc.

To be honest - maybe the most useful thing people who aren't developers could do is occasionally play a game testing the newest released R5 client on the Beta server and finding the more serious bugs......

Edit: And as for a rewrite Sam 1$ a month wouldn't cover it - you are talking a reasonable sized team of Devs for at least a year full time (this is the minimum I'd think) 1$ would not cover it if your thinking of paying them....

I meant after the rewrite. The rewrite itself would have to be opensource by volunteers. Actually, the Quantus Dev team was talking about making that a second project if Quantus gets finished. After the rewrite, the 1$ would be for upkeep and expansion. I don't think you could fund a rewrite in any way with such a small community.

Yeah, even if everyone currently on the leaderboard as active paid $1 a month, that's less than $600/month.

FAZ Wednesdays have been a good, painful tradition in the past.

I also used to wear the badges!

Well, my personal opinion is, we don't need those people.

A proper graphics upgrade will require quite a few devs who can do magic with DirectX/OpenGL. Most of them are paid bazillions of dollars to work 25 hours a day. The way Alleg is written, a graphics upgrade entails nearly fully rewriting the game.

So, for the precious little dev resources we (used to) have, there are better things to do.

Of course, unless someone is interesting in porting the FSOpen engine to work with Allegiance (or the other way around - porting Allegiance gameplay rules into FSOpen).

Allegiance has never been for the many. Always for the few.
