I like the idea behind wierd green fungi collecting radiation for energy, because it provides a cool source of income. According to the storyline He3 is valuable because it is the fuel that all ships need. With green fungi collecting energy, you don't need He3, so you make money by building stuff with green fungi on it, instead of mining He3. You could build solar panels on any asteroid to generate money. No miners, just weird, green, rocks.

And by the way, maybe make every ship cost money to go along with Barr's idea of having everything produce money.
So, you need to protect your stuff? Ask the comm for $50 to get your scout and probe, or get your Int and smash.

I once read MS had an idea similar to what I'm posting here for it, like every ship costed money (that's why they invented non-donation) except the scout and to gain money you had to go out and do stuff for your commander as a scout or gather loose debris.
Hmmm, maybe make a faction specific item out there that you force everyone to collect? This might be the response to everyone that ever thought "pilotable miners".

the newbies would have a school day if they could actually collect money. thats all they'd do and they'd go hoard it... Newbies are all pirates deep down inside and it's our duty to rip that notion violently out of their systems not enforce it

Wow... friggin awesome Garr!!!! It's got 3 ports tho. Does that mean two for entry and one for exit?
