as a pure combat ship, the viper is better. if you want to do anything else, the cobra wins.

In that case I will stick with the Viper for now.

How does having multiple ships work? I see they probably get stored at a station, is it possible to have them shipped out to new stations places you discover? It'd be nice to get something with a longer range, but I would always want access to my Viper.

Sadly it hasn't been implemented yet (a phrase to get used to, the list of planned features stretches out for a decade). For now I recommend finding a nice system to call home, and keep your ships there.

If you feel like picking a side between the superpowers, both the Federal and the Imperial navies have restricted ships they only sell to trusted mercenaries. The Federal Dropship and the Imperial Clipper are the only two so far, but there are at least the Corvette and the Cutter coming later. Those are genuine navy warships, the largest combat ships you "still fly form the pilot's seat".

This is the concept pic for the Federal Corvette

As for the Viper or Cobra question, I'm quite fond of the Cobra personally, but since it has larger components, it takes many millions more than the Viper to equip to the same level. They have the same amount of punch. The Viper is a touch faster, and with a better grouping of hard points, the Cobra is more durable, but also a much larger target.

I downloaded and installed the game today, requested access to a group called "allegiance", idk if that's you guys?

my callsign is One-Man-Bucket. Got through the basics and got my controls set up now I think.. Stuck on the navigation tutorial atm, can't figure out how to find the destination station behind the sun, can't seem to find a way to target it and the area around the sun is pretty huge

1 to access your navigation pane.

wasd to select the destination station from the list.

Space to select.

Carry on.

The tutorials leave a lot to be desired tbh, I spent ages trying to figure out how to request docking permission.

figured it out, thanks!

launched a new "open game", is that some kind of multiplayer thing? launching from the station was piece of cake, jumped to a new system and shot some toxic waste barrels. Then my kid woke up, tried to play with him on my knee but after 2 minutes we had crashed into a sun. GG

any tips on what i should do first?

Am so old...

Played the original Elite on my Apple IIc in 85. Never forget the joy of docking correctly the first time. Ahh the memories..the vector based graphic memories..no color..Computers without mice. No hard drives, 180K floppies. the chunka chunk sounds of floppy drive access.

Open and Solo play are essentially the same, you just can't meet other players in Solo, just NPCs.

The best thing to do is check where you are and do some trading. There are various trading tools if you fancy some help or you can just fly around the space stations until you figure out a good trading route.
