Elite: Dangerous
Pretty much this.HSharp wrote:QUOTE (HSharp @ Jan 18 2015, 11:52 PM) I think a lot more features need to be complete, still a lot of concepts not yet implemented so really the game looks like it's still in beta.
IMO it's well worth the price already, but it's definitely a work in progress.
Bacon, this could help you decide. Yahtzee is right on the money, as per usual

So I bought this. Completely new to the elite series, not terribly impressed so far. I don't currently have a chance to watch yatzee's review yet, but here's my impressions of the game after about 4hours:
-tutorials are pretty much useless other than for getting a feel and immediately realizing you need to remap every single control. They provide no real info, just scenarios that you will encounter in game - for example, for the docking tutorial they don't actually tell you how to request permission to dock, just that you need to. Basically I should have just read the wiki instead of doing a tutorial.
-initial controls for mouse are almost as bad as alleg - up down axis on mouse, left right on keyboard - wtf?
-dogfighting feels like I'm flying a corvette or something of comparable mass in Alleg. Hopefully this improves with better ships.
-no initial task. Normally in a game fairly complex it's nice to be introduced to some core concepts through a first mission. This game plunks you on a station and says figure it out!
-Storyline. Not sure if there is anything yet or if all there is to this game is a bunch of side missions posted on a bulletin board. I'm really hoping there's actually some form of content, not just missions to deliver Corp. Jefferson's laundry from point a to point b. I find it's usually a good idea to have some form of introduction to the storyline right away as it generates interest.
-there's no pinging of missions on the map. When you have like 3million places to choose from, it might be nice to have a little direction as to what sector(s) your mission goal is in. And when I do finally find my target it's often fairly ambiguous, for instance I was trying to track down some pirates, I happen across what looks to be a target, he asks me not to kill the pirates and he will give me some monies, not having any real sign above him saying his a pirate or not, logically I assume that he's with the baddies so I kill him thus giving me a 5k fine.
I'm not saying this is a bad game, I'm mostly pointing out it's absolutely horrible for someone without a clue. I'm sure once I get over the initial learning curve it will actually be fun, but for now it just feels like I'm flying aimlessly around.

And everyone's first (and sometimes last) experience of the original Elite was finding yourself outside a station and dying whilst trying to dock.
I think Shiz makes mostly fair criticism. I'm not sure it needs an initial task to get you going, maybe a suggested trade route to run instead?
Story wise, I suspect that there will be a story that builds up but mostly I think it's fine without one. The stories come from things that happen (like when I got involved in a fight between a Pirate Anaconda and some security Vipers, I got shot up pretty badly but still managed to get the kill netting a sweet 75k). I like that your story is unique to you, not just some standard mission progression that everyone does. Saying that, there does need to be far more variety in the missions to make them worthwhile.

not sure the storyline criticism is that valid tbh, the lure of elite (or at least the allure of the original elite and especially frontier) was always bimbling about in a universe doing your own thing. if they can sort multiplayer out then what has happened in eve will probably start to happen in e:d and everyone will go on and on about how fantastic it is.
the missions do need to be sorted out, mind - they are too samey and too dependent on the pilot going looking for random events. with regards to the "kill pirates" ones, it would have been better to do what they did in frontier and have some systems absolutely crawling with the bastards - as it is now, anarchy systems are too quiet and settled systems too busy (agri has found pirates 9,000km away from Li Qing Jao, for instance). also whats with some unsanctioned stations having no black market?

Runs pretty damn smooth for me, full ultra no crashes and no real lag or anything. If it's a euro server then they've got a really good one.
I tried another pirate mission, this time I encountered one but he ran away before my starter guns could finish him off. Guess the tickle cannons just aren't cutting it
Starting to get stuff figured out, this game has sort of a civ like pull to it, pretty easy just to throw away hours of your life without getting pretty much anything accomplished.

That way you can pull trades out of hyperspace and steal their cargo.
