Why not make that forum readable for everyone and put only security applied topics into a hidden forum?
this.
Allegiance open (shared) source development should not be behind closed doors. It's just stupid. The CSS development has a reason for being behind closed doors, but not Alleginace dev.

If there were a way to make it read-only to everyone who's not in the group, I'd be willing to put it to another vote.

Why does it work on news forum?!
Everyone can reply to news posts, while only people which are on a special group can start a new posts.
You may need someone with administrator rights (TB/TE/Thal/Pook), who can change forum/usergroup permissions.

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.

Regardless, it's better to have it completely open than not open at all. There simply isn't a good reason to close it to a small group, the only thing that comes close to a good reason is "we don't want trolls in there", which is a largely non-problem. Look no further than at the helpline if you think trolls are going to be a problem; AFAIK they don't get many. You can also increase moderation and rules if you think people are "out of line".
A forum consisting of you and Xynth and a bunch of admins isn't exactly fostering development.

Two things.
1) It *is* a problem for serious discussions. Look at how much Spidey and Xeretov have to remove/invis posts in the CC forum for evidence of that.
2) Currently, the dev lead's office sees a post about every 2 months and often goes for 6 months or more. It's been that way since long before I was dev zone lead and 7 of the last 9 topics in the "Developer's Lounge" were started by Imago so there's nothing to all this "behind closed doors" stuff some people keep spouting.
