Many of the Aussie and NZ players left this game around mid 09. Maybe has something to do with the overall decline in the playerbase. There was always a small playerbase as far as I can remember due to the smaller populations and the fact the servers have always not been the best and due to newer games.
The reason 3FL seemed a bit borked was because the guy from 3FL who set it up had to run it behind a virtual server and emulator on a linux box...and he didn't really get too much help to set it up so things like the rank file wasn't working. The reason he set it up that way was something to do with windows server 2003 or 2007? not working with alleg and was the only box he had as he hosted other games to that 3FL host.
Back then, on weekends we did have a lot of people from AU, NZ playing and a few Singaporeans / Vietnamese but I think Japan,China,India players still had a bad ping or comparable ping to GPZ or Planet.
If this were to get the up the game needs to be marketed on whirlpool.net, Ausgamer, 3fl, internode, nz gameplayer etc gaming forums. I don't think paper flyers would work as well as online gaming forums. I am happy to post on some of these forums.
I know that Euro and US players just won't play on it when they can play on Planet or GPZ where they get a superior ping so if it did get up needs to be just for the Asia-Pac countries really and we'd need a LOT more players than we do today for it to be actively used.
It could work and be used on weekends or Aussie/NZ prime time when it's basiscally sleeptime hour in America and EU sleep/work hour but you would need the few euros//us players that play at these times to be on these servers to build up the playerbase otherwise newbies will log on and leave cos it looks like a dead game. In my experience though, the few EU players on normally whine to get GPZ.
Who's paying for this server and who's setting it all up?

Maybe disable GPZ and Planet from 2am local time until 3pm local time to support the au-server. (except for weekends.)

No one would bitch about it until it happened, and they would bitch only because it's something to bitch about.

If you do that by hand every day or write a script that does it (while not interrupting games in progress, etc.). pkk would love the suggestion...

Have you guys spoken to anyone from internode? They have a reputation for being massively helpful in these sorts of things, for example, a game you've probably heard of, mount and blade, recently released an expansion that added multiplayer content to the game. During the beta alot of australians were accepted as testers and it was quickly realised that the game just didnt work with pings over 150ms, one of the testers was an avid poster on the whirlpool.com forums which is known for having alot of the managers from internode posting (internode is an ISP by the way) they took up the case, got a copy of the server client from the developer, installed and hosted the server on their own infrastructure for the entire duration of the beta and only put a small 'hosted by internode' on the welcome screen. I dont post on whirlpool personally, but I'm sure if you put it out there you have a good chance of it being picked up.

We're currently working with 3fl games, apparently a part of iinet?
http://www.3fl.net.au/
If we can get a decent number of Aussies, we'll be sure to push to expand, but it will take quite a few to need two servers . .. a problem I'd be happy to have.
