What Girly said.

In addition - Do you really want to pilot a miner and sit on a rock for much of the game....

Nah, when I D miners I try to avoid looking at them directly, since forward scan range is longer than rear scan range (I never *quite* understood that), so I try to keep my forward sensors pointed at... not solid rock. >_< Usually the direction I expect something to come from, like an aleph leading to the enemy sectors or something.

Also on the wiki:

Why we don't have a squad called @Merc
How bases with turrets are so cool they don't even exist
The inadvisability of creating a spectator team
and which is better? Mouse or joystick?

The original devs thought about this, then they realised that there is no point in a game in which a major factor of winning is doing boring stuff.

Basically, you should be rewarded for doing complex dificult fun things, not boring repetative dull things.

The only case where I think this could be momentarily fun is mining in a sector controlled by somebody else while you have mini3 ints up, so long as you could type "LOLOLOLOL" in all chat to your opponents.

Somewhat similar to riding freighters without having any use for the towers.

In a relative sense, using seismics to destroy He3 rocks in enemy sectors achieves a similar effect (producing a positive delta of cash).
