I think It's be better with a code change. I wouldn't like a long game ending up giving me a choice bewteen 36 ships.
A code change could put a tag on "mod" versions and could make it easier to manage.

It would be fun if light int really was what it said. A light weight interceptor that would be agile and get great acceleration and speed. When one gets ints and eventually heavy ints, the light ints would still be awailable as a ship class.

So heavy ints would still be the bruisers of the game, but they would be slower than the quick and nimble light ints.

Maybe it's just my personal fancy...

Hmm adept, instead of alternate ships, you could just raise the mass of miniguns and lower the mass of ints.
